Prospective Students

ISL welcomes undergraduate and graduate students interested in robotics, AI, sensing, and embedded systems. Research positions are available through directed study, capstone projects, and thesis supervision.

We look for students who are:

Self-motivated and comfortable working on open-ended problems
Interested in hands-on hardware and software integration
Willing to engage with the full stack — theory, implementation, and validation
Enrolled in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related program at SSU

Industry and Collaborators

We partner with industry and academic collaborators on applied research in intelligent systems, health sensing, and autonomous robotics. Current areas of active collaboration include:

Robotics and manipulation — sim-to-real, reinforcement learning, physical systems
Non-invasive biomedical sensing — breath VOC analysis, clinical pilots
Edge AI and embedded deployment — microcontroller inference, low-power sensing
Computer vision — classification, detection, language-guided systems

Donors and Supporters

ISL operates on a combination of grants, university support, and philanthropic contributions. Equipment donations and targeted gifts directly support student research — enabling access to hardware, computing resources, and conference travel that would otherwise be out of reach.

The ISL Donation Fund is established through the Sonoma State University Foundation. Gifts of any size are welcome. For major gifts or equipment donations, please contact Dr. Shrestha directly.
